Wanda Jo Pendleton
Funeral service for Wanda J. Pendleton, 86, will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, March 2, 2022 in the McRay Funeral Home Chapel. She passed away Saturday, February 26, 2022 from complications following a stroke.
Born May 29, 1935, Wanda Jo was the eldest daughter of Gano and Opal (Cary) McGuffin. She was raised in the Laverty community attending Freeman and Lyon schools before graduating from Pioneer High School in 1953. She went on to attend OCW (Oklahoma College for Women) earning a degree in Elementary Education.
After college Wanda worked for Mr. Dunn in several of his Dairy Queen stores. She could still make the curly-Q on the ice cream cones, boasting "There's nothing to it!" It was at one of these stores where she met, and later married, Dale Pendleton in November, 1967. To this union their only child, Lisa was born.
Though she never taught full time in the classroom, she spent her life investing in the lives of children. As a member of FBC Amber and later Sharon Baptist Church, Wanda taught children's Sunday School class and helped with Vacation Bible School. After retiring from the activities department at Shannon Springs Nursing Home, Wanda began to volunteer in the Foster Grandparents Program serving as Grandma Wanda at Head Start and in the Kindergarten classroom at Bill Wallace Early Childhood Center. Wanda loved working crossword puzzles and playing scrabble. She was always busy doing something. She walked every day for exercise and even learned to boot scoot in her sixties!
Wanda was preceded in death by her husband Dale; parents Gano and Opal McGuffin; sisters BG McGuffin, Barbara Ann Henderson, Mary Ellen Ferguson and Margaret Katherine Rolley; brother-in-law Larry Rolley and niece Anita Rolley St Clair.
Survivors include daughter Lisa Pendleton of Oklahoma City, nine nieces and nephews who "fight" over who's the favorite, and many lifelong friends. If you knew my Momma, you were blessed.
Interment will be in the Laverty Cemetery. Services are under the direction of McRay Funeral Home.
